1. Tehri Dam (260.5 m) –
Tehri Dam is the highest dam in India and fourth highest dam in the world. It is around 260.5 metre high and 592 metre long. It is part of the Tehri Dam & Hydro Power Project (the multi-purpose river valley project) taken up for construction on River Bhagirathi to tap its vast potential for irrigation and hydro-electric purposes. It is located in the Tehri district of Uttarakhand.
The Tehri Dam is a primary dam of the Tehri Development Project located in the Tehri District of Uttarakhand State. It is also known as Swami Ramathirtha Sagar Dam.
This dam is built on two important rivers of the Himalayas, one of which is the major tributary of the Ganges River, the Bhagirathi River and the other is the Bhilangana River, at whose confluence it is built.
2. Bhakra Dam (226 m) – Himachal Pradesh
Bhakra Nangal Dam is the world's highest gravity dam located in the seismic zone.
This dam is built on the Sutlej River. This dam is made up of two dams Bhakra and Nangal dams. Bhakra Dam is built 13 km from Nangal Dam.
Located on the Sutlej River in Punjab is India's largest multipurpose river valley project. It is a joint project of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Rajasthan has 15.2 percent stake in it. Its total length is 649 km, of which 169 km is in Punjab and 14 km in Haryana and the rest in Rajasthan!
3. Idukki Dam (168.91 m) – Kerela
It is one of the tallest arc dams in Asia with an elevation of 167.68 meters (550.1 ft). It has been built by the Kerala State Electricity Corporation and is also owned by the dam. The dam is connected to the 780 MW hydroelectric power station at Moolamattam, where power generation started on 4 October 1975.
The dam is of concrete, two-reactive parabolic, tapered arc type.
4. Koldam Dam (167 m) – Himachal Pradesh
Koldam Hydroelectric Power Station, commonly known as Koldam, is an embankment dam on the Sutlej River above Dehar Power House. It is 18 km from Bilaspur on the Chandigarh-Manali highway near Barmana in Himachal Pradesh.
The main objective of the dam is hydropower generation and it will support the 800 MW power station.
The reservoir created by the dam can hold up to 560 million cubic meters of water
5. Sardar Sarovar Dam (163 m) – Gujarat
Sardar Sarovar is the second largest dam in India. It is 138 meters high built on the Narmada River. Sardar Sarovar and Maheshwar are the two largest dam projects among the 30 dams to be built on the Narmada River and have been continuously opposed.
6. Ranjit Sagar Dam (160 m)
Thein dam has been built on the Ravi river in Pathankot district of Punjab. It is also known as 'Ranjit Sagar Dam'.
The construction of Thein Dam started in 1982 and was completed in 1999.
7. Srisailam Dam (145.10 m) – Andhra Pradesh
The Srisailam dam has been constructed in Andhra Pradesh near the Krishna River, Srisailam temple town in Kurnool district and is the second largest hydroelectric power station in the country. The dam was constructed in a deep moat in the Nallamala hills between Kurnool and Mahbubnagar districts, 300 meters above sea level.
The dam has alone cost ₹ 4.04 billion together with the installation of four generating sets of 110 MW each. The right bank branch canal is estimated to cost ₹ 4.49 billion and the initial investment of ₹ 1.4 billion has been provided by the World Bank.
8. Chamera Dam (140 m) – Himachal Pradesh
The Chamera Dam impounds the River Ravi and supports the hydroelectricity project in the region. It is located near the town of Dalhousie, in the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India The reservoir of the dam is the Chamera Lake. Large part of its reservoir lies in Salooni sub-division of Chamba
9. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam (124 m) – Andhra Pradesh
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is a masonry dam across the Krishna River at Nagarjuna Sagar which straddles the border between Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh and Nalgonda district, Telangana. Constructed between 1955 and 1967, the dam created a water reservoir with gross storage capacity of 11.472 billion cubic metres
10. Koyna Dam (103 m) – Maharashtra
The Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra, India. It is a rubble-concrete dam constructed on Koyna River which rises in Mahabaleshwar, a hillstation in Sahyadri ranges. It is located in Koyna Nagar, Satara district, nestled in the Western Ghats on the state highway between Chiplun and Karad
